Since 1974, The Merchants, Restaurants, and Professionals, as well as the twin cities of Albany and Berkeley CA, have hosted the Solano Avenue Stroll, the East Bay’s largest street festival! The Solano Avenue Merchants Association invites you to come and see what makes Solano Avenue such a wonderful place.
Over five hundred vendors, non-profit organizations, food booths and entertainers
Participants and the event guests visit from everywhere throughout California; as well as neighboring states from Nevada to Maine.
The fun begins at 10 am with the opening of Solano Avenue businesses and Stroll booths and the kick-off is the theme parade with about 100 groups.
After the parade, you can visit one of 75 entertainers, 50 food booths, 150 juried arts and crafters, games, wacky art cars, and almost 200 community non-profit and government organizations, not to mention the unique and popular professional services, restaurants, and shops already here on Solano Avenue.

Suzie has been one of many championing the live art movement in the San Francisco Bay Area, doing live art to live music regularly in and around San Francisco, collaborating with some of the Bay Areas finest local musicians. In 2008, she founded the art & music collective, Local 365, to facilitate collaboration and cohesion within local creative culture, while making the fine arts more visible and accessible to local audiences.
She has exhibited art and/or has done live art with numerous venues locally and abroad, including The de Young Museum, The New York Stock Exchange, Sesame Street (as aired on PBS), SFJAZZ, The San Francisco Jazz Heritage Museum and Yoshi’s SF."

There will be 2000 square feet of wall space set up to be painted in the park. A limited amount of paint will be given out to youth and artists who would like to participate in painting. People are welcome and encouraged to bring their own painting supplies as well.

Mad World: Messages to the Future, an exhibition featuring work by fourteen artists’ that imagine the future in 40 years through a fictional history of objects. In considering work for the exhibition, artists’ were asked ponder the statement, ‘If you’re interested in the future, Invent it.” Responses range from both the artistic representation of objects 40 years from now, to witty and thoughtful statements about our cultural evolution. Through works such as future almanac entries, nomad friendly furniture and functional objects made from discarded material, the exhibition will display a unique imagining of what’s to come.
Last year, Galería organized an exhibition entitled Strange Hope in response to the ambivalent feelings of expectation and despair brought on by the inauguration of the Obama era and the simultaneous downfall of the economy. One year later, with the world in worse shape than ever before, we invited artists to think beyond the troubling times and instead summon a creative visioning of the future.
Mad World: Messages to the Future paves the way for Galería’s 40th anniversary season. The exhibition will include an interactive component in which the public will be invited to share their thoughts, desires, and aspirations of Galería in 40 years. Entries will be included in a catalog as a ‘time capsule,’ which will then be preserved in Galería’s archive at the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives at UC Santa Barbara.

“NATHANIEL ERAS” Born in the central valley (in the farm town known as Fresno) Eras eventually migrated to San Francisco in 2000, where he began working with various local acts. While living in Oakland, Eras teamed up with electronic auteur William Marshall (a.k.a. Octavius) for the 2003 release, Audio Noir. The project received unexpected acclaim from leading independent music publications such as XLR8R, URB and The Wire, as well as a nomination for Hip-Hop Album of The Year by the L.A Weekly in 2004. But that, as they say, was just the beginning. From there Eras produced Autonomous Objects, an E.P. sponsored by B.E.A.R. that was available exclusively as a digital release. Music from Eras’ catalog (including the aforementioned EP) went on to be featured in such programs as MTV2’s Nike Battle Grounds as well as a television campaign for SV Vodka and a digital campaign for KEDS shoes. While all of these accomplishments were impressive enough, mostly, they served as a signposts on the road to Eras’ latest project, Unearthed. For Unearthed, Eras has constructed an entire reinterpretation of Nosferatu, the 1922 silent film classic. For the piece, Eras masterfully employed dark synth phrases and distorted melodies over augmented drum breaks, all while evoking both tension and mystery. Autobody Fine Art presents Alameda's first Dia De Los Muertos festival and exhibition Saturday, October 31st from 12:00pm till 10:00pm.
The festival will feature local and traditional food, arts and activities. Orgullo Mexicana, an all-female mariachi group, and Aztec dancers will be performing throughout the festival and on into the evening. Also there will be a community altar open to everyone to bring tokens and photos of their loved ones who have passed.
The island of Alameda is so appropriately centered in the middle of a cultural convergence. It's ever emerging cultural awareness as well as the influences we carry back here will continue the preservation of this 3,000 year old celebration in La Isla De Los Muertos, or Island Of The Dead. An all-day festival and exhibition celebrates the holiday of Dia De Los Muertos and its place in our community as we live, work and die in the East Bay.
Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a dark mournful commemoration but a vibrant joyful celebration. It gives us a moment to evoke the lives of our ancestors and loved ones by telling the stories we long to remember. Brightly colored cempasuchitls, or flower of the dead, that blossom in the valleys of México, drape over pale gray concrete graves. The scent of sweet pine drifts through the air from burning copal, guiding the spirits to their offerings. Homemade dishes of favorite meals and water to quench the soul beckon the spirits of our ancestors to rest peacefully with the living. A shroud is lifted between the two realms to share this special day together.

Renee Castro's work is elliptical. She weaves contemporary fables from metaphors and anecdotes ripped from the near and distant past. I could explain it further, but the cadence of her statement is all the introduction needed. Viewing the work is the only way to understand the visual logic of a dreamlike state.

Creation stories, tall tails, the old and the new are the foundation for my paintings and drawings of Native American women. In addition, I found inspiration from the sexualization of women and stereotypes put upon Native Americans. I grew up with images of romanticize paintings of Native American people. These were not the images I saw day to day. These depictions of my culture were of a different time and age, which were not always depicted true. Now I take that old idea and make it new. From headdress, high heels, face paint, eyeliner, animals, playing cards and cigarettes they are all subject matter that I use to reinterpret images and memories."

In 2008, Everybody Get Up began their first wave of gallery exhibited art shows. They are now a force in the East Bay Urban Art Scene. This time around EGU is reaching for records. After a couple rounds with Poorman’s cardboard Everybody Get Up’s “What Goes Around, Comes Around” is brought to you on vinyl records and their jacket covers. EGU will remix the jackets with their original flavor and dose the vinyl with character settings and stencil art. The colors will pop; the characters will rock; and the party will hop.

This group from Oakland, CA came together through an idea MC/Vocalist/Producer Ty Hardman had back in 2003. He handled all production, recording, instrumentation, and vocals on the demo tracks, but it was only until a complete band was formed, that the sound became fully realized. Each member in the band is deep rooted in music here in the Bay Area, and once this lineup of the group formed, Hypnotic started quite a stir in the area with their live performances. Live sets include Drummer Steve Pellerin, Vocalist Carmen Pellerin, Keys player Jonathan Veekner, Jon Merker on Bass, Percussionist Mike Demasio, and Shomari Mosey on Sax; bringin' you a smooth blend of Reggae, Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz and a little something extra. Shows are packed with energy, infectiously dancey grooves that get you bobbin your head and movin your feet, good vibes, plenty of improv just when the time is right, and often speak on current relevant issues that we all face. They are currently working on a live DVD/CD package that was recorded at E'xpression College for Digital Arts, as well as some clubs local to the Bay. It is set to be released in August 2009. In the meantime, come check ‘em at a local get down near YOU! Keep your soul open. Speak from the heart. Not the mind. Peace & Blessings
